The Pink Picnic has become one of the most recognisable community events in Salford, playing an important role in shaping both the identity of the city and its reputation as a welcoming and inclusive place. Celebrating its 15-year anniversary in 2026, the event has grown from a small grassroots gathering into one of the largest LGBTQ+ pride events in the area.

First launched in 2011 as the Peel Park Pink Picnic, the event was founded by Salford Pride founders Lee Bowditch and Adrian Palmer. Their vision was to create a relaxed, accessible event where LGBTQ+ people, allies and the wider community could come together in a spirit of openness, visibility and celebration. The first event welcomed just 120 people to Peel Park, gathering for a simple picnic that celebrated love, diversity and unity. What began as a modest community initiative has since grown into a vibrant annual pride event that now attracts more than 8,000 attendees.

While the scale of The Pink Picnic has changed dramatically over the years, its community-led ethos has remained central to its identity. Volunteers have played a crucial role in shaping the pride event from its earliest days, helping it evolve from a small gathering in the park into the major celebration it is today. Each year, volunteers collectively contribute more than 4,000 hours to organise, plan and deliver the event.

Much of this work takes place behind the scenes in the months leading up to the day itself. Volunteers coordinate performers, organise community stalls, manage logistics, support fundraising efforts, promote the event and help ensure everything runs smoothly. Their dedication has allowed The Pink Picnic to grow while maintaining its welcoming, grassroots spirit. The history of the event is closely connected to the passion and commitment of those who have supported it over the past decade and a half. As attendance steadily increased, so too did the ambition of the organisers and volunteers.

What started as a simple picnic gradually expanded to include live music, performances, community groups, charity stalls and family-friendly activities. Through careful planning and the tireless work of volunteers, the event developed into a large-scale pride celebration while staying true to its original purpose: creating a safe and joyful space where people can celebrate identity, inclusivity and community. Volunteer involvement has also helped strengthen the connection between The Pink Picnic and the wider Salford community. People from many different backgrounds contribute their time and skills, including students, local residents, activists and members of community organisations. This shared effort has helped build lasting partnerships across the city and ensured the event reflects the diversity of the people who attend it.

A Celebration of unity after the pandemic (Pink Picnic)

For many volunteers, being part of the organisation behind The Pink Picnic is about more than organising a pride event; it is about contributing to something meaningful that positively shapes the city they live in. Over time, The Pink Picnic has helped foster a stronger culture of openness and acceptance within Salford. By providing a welcoming public space where people can celebrate openly and safely, the event has helped increase the visibility of LGBTQ+ communities while encouraging broader support and understanding. Its growth from 120 attendees in 2011 to thousands today reflects not only the increasing confidence of the community but also the strength of the volunteer network that continues to support it.

As The Pink Picnic marks its 15-year milestone in 2026, its journey highlights the power of grassroots organisations and community collaboration. Built on thousands of volunteer hours and years of dedication, the event stands as a testament to what can be achieved when people come together with a shared purpose. Through the vision of its founders and the ongoing commitment of its volunteers, The Pink Picnic has become not only a celebration of pride and inclusivity, but also a defining part of Salford’s community.
